iPad is too big to fit most jacket pockets, so do you expect an ‘iPad Nano’ which has a new 7-inch iPad and an 11.6-inch replacement? No matter what your answer is, at present, that’s just a rumor about iPad Nano. The word is from Apple’s production facilities in ShenZhen.

It is said there are five different baby iPad designs floating around, presumbly to keep people guessing, but that the production version is likely to look more like a bigger iPhone 4 than a smaller version of the current iPad.

Details about the hardware are pretty sketchy, but the news is that it will be about 30% lighter than the current iPad. Production is expected to start in December.

The journalism student: “I humbly ask why Apple is so wonderfully attentive to the needs of students … and yet, ironically, the Media Relations Department fails to answer any of my questions which are, as I have repeatedly told them, essential to my academic performance,”

Jobs: “Our goals do not include helping you get a good grade. Sorry.”

The journalism student: “I never said that your goal should be to ‘help me get a good grade’. Rather, I politely asked why your media relations team does not respond to emails, which, consequently, decreases my chances of getting a good grade. But, forget about my individual situation; what about common courtesy, in general – if you get a message from a client or customer, as an employee, isn’t it your job to return the call? That’s what I always thought. But I guess that’s not one of your goals.”

Jobs: “Nope. We have over 300 million users and we can’t respond to their requests unless they involve a problem of some kind. Sorry.”

The journalism student: “Now, can they kindly respond to my request (my polite and friendly voice can be heard in the first five or 10 messages in their inbox). Please, I am on deadline,”

Jobs: “Please leave us alone.”

I think Jobs is patient enough to reply to the journalism student’s emails for three times. And I don’t mention the name of this journalism student, in order to avoid a hype of herself.

This is a big quesion that decides if iPad is a big factor in declinning notebook sales. Obviously to me, the answer is ‘No’. And I think most of poeple have done like me who would rather to buy the qualified iPad from exquisite Apple than those low-cost notebooks.

“We expect tablets to continue to pressure PCs as more vendors launch products (e.g., Dell Streak and Samsung Tab) and Apple expands its iPad distribution,” read Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty’s research note, as quoted by Fortune.

Huberty’s note incorporates data from research firm The NPD Group, which shows six months’ worth of declining U.S. sales for notebooks between March and August. By that point, overall U.S. notebook sales were down 4 percent year-over-year—the first time that particular segment experienced such a dip. Early September data suggests a similar negative trend. “Tablet cannibalization” is a significant factor in those numbers, she reportedly wrote.

Huberty also expects sales of 50 million tablets in 2011.

Best Buy plans to heavily promote the iPad during the holiday shopping season, and expand distribution of the device to all of its 1,093 stores in the United States. “People are willing to disproportionally spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives,” Brian Dunn, CEO of Best Buy, is quoted as saying in a Sept. 14 Wall Street Journal interview. “We are really positioning the company to be the place where people can come and see the best of the connected world.”

Other analysts have suggested the iPad could affect lower-end PC sales.

“Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad, causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad-like tablets,” UBS Investment Research analyst Maynard Um wrote in a Sept. 8 research note, excerpted on the blog Apple Insider. “We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment.”

At an event here at the Time Warner Center on tonight, Samsung took the wraps off its iPad-killer, the Galaxy Tab. It also announced a new service called Media Hub, an iTunes-like service, which allows consumers to buy and rent movies and TV shows for their Samsung portable devices.

The announcements follow Samsung’s launch earlier this summer of the Galaxy S smartphone, the closest competitor Samsung has to the iconic Apple iPhone.

The new Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S smartphone run the Google Android operating system, an open software platform that rivals Apple iOS, which is used on the iPhone and iPad.

While the smartphone market is already well established with several key manufacturers duking it out for market share, the tablet PC market is only just getting started. The iPad, which has come to define the segment, only came out on the market in April. Apple sold 3 million in the first 80 days it was on the market.

Analysts say there is plenty of room for other entrants. Since the iPad launch, several companies have announced plans for products that tap into this market. And as many handset manufacturers have done in the past, tablet PC makers are turning to the Google Android operating system as the foundation of their products. Dell, Acer, Motorola, and LG Electronics have each said they have plans to make Android-based tablets.

The Galaxy Tab could be among the most competitive in the near term, according to RBC Capital equities analyst Mark Sue.

Actually there in the market have been some streaming-focused devices through which we can enjoy web resourses on TV, such HD movies and TV shows. So what are the differences between Apple TV and them? I think that is a little similar as that between iPhone and other brands’ cell phones. To me, iPhone is the name of a new digital gadget, but not a cell phone, as it is from Apple. That is also my opinion on all the apple products.

Steve Jobs just pulled out the world famous “one more thing” for nothing other than… a new Apple TV. It’s now a streaming-focused device in a small matte black enclosure we’re calling “the hockey puck.” It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse.

Inside there isn’t much — there’s no local storage, which makes this thing an entirely different beast than old Apple TVs, relying entirely on the “cloud” for content. Those new streaming HD TV rentals from ABC and Fox will be a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will be a less thrilling $4.99. Other services include Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, and Mobile Me, along with Rotten Tomatoes integration in the movie catalog.

You can also stream from your computer, if you miss those old hard drive-sourced days of yore, but iOS 4.2’s AirPlay  also enables streaming from an iPad straight to an Apple TV for something much more surreal. The best news? Apple will start shipping this sucker four weeks from now for $99.

Sara Bareilles: I’m not a very good co-writer; I never have been. I enjoy it in the sense of collaboration — I’ve met some really lovely people and had a good time — but I come out with material that I don’t feel that connected to. … I’m such an autobiographical writer. The songs for me are very much like diary entries, and it feels strange to share that with someone.

Question: John Fogerty has said that a guitar will call out to him when it has a song ready. Does your piano do that for you?

It usually feels like this big old blank canvas. I don’t ever feel like it doesn’t. It’s there to listen and to help me articulate, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It always feels like some kind of sanctuary, so if anything sucks or if I’m in a bad mood or the day is horrible or I feel whatever, it’s sort of there to be my companion to get through that.

Question: What prompted you to write your current hit, “King of Anything”?

I’d just started to share the music for the first time [with the] label, management and band; I just started to see everyone giving me their feedback, which is what they were supposed to do, but then realizing that was kind of shaking me up a little bit. I was realizing, “OK, here it goes,” and so it begins again, where you open yourself back up.

It felt like a channeling experience. I wrote it really quickly. It was the same way that ‘Love Song” came down, and it felt very true and like I needed to say that. I knew it was going to be the first single.

Question: On “Not Alone,” you have a most unusual guest, Alfred Hitchcock. How did that come about?

It’s an old, old interview off the BBC. That song came out so much darker than I had originally thought it would. At the last minute we wrote the musical interlude. It sounded beautiful, but very theatrical, like a soap opera scene or something. It didn’t feel complete. I was thinking we could sample an old movie. I love “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock, and we were looking online and we stumbled across this interview, and that quote was the perfect length, the perfect sentiment, so it felt very serendipitous that I found that.

Question: You were on some Lilith Fair dates this summer. Why did you want to be part of the all-female festival?

I consider myself a feminist, but not in the man-hating way. I really felt firsthand the struggles that one encounters as a female, especially in the music industry. It is such a boys club, and, I felt, especially getting started, that I had to kick and scream to be heard, and I [was] excited to be around other women who have probably experienced the same thing, just to see how everybody else conducts their business. I’m usually the only girl — my entire crew and my entire band is all male — so I like the idea of being around some other female energy.

It’s the brainchild of Fraser Speirs, the IT director of Cedars School of Excellence in Greenock, who wanted to solve the problem of the school’s computer lab, which had 12 desktops and 12 laptops, constantly being overbooked.

First he thought of giving everyone iPod Touches, but that wouldn’t have allowed them to do serious work like writing essays. Then the iPad was launched, and it now takes care of 99% of the work the students need to do.

You could argue that school can afford this because it’s a private school. But Fraser Speirs points out that the total costs (around £58,000, or $89,400 over three years) are amortized across every class, and long term the school is saving money on photocopying, paper, pens and eventually, books.

Speirs refutes criticisms that his school is trying to get rid of pen and paper for good. “We are not building a paperless school. Paper is often a temporary version of something that is digital,” he says. “I might still print out two pages from a PDF textbook for students to scribble on.”
